Treasury Accountant

Job Description

TendePay Limited is a fast-growing Payments Service Provider set out to empower Africa's businesses by providing a digital platform that automates financial operations from collections to spending to reconciliation. This is not a back-office numbers role. As our Treasury Accountant, you will be the custodian of customer funds, ensuring that TendePay maintains full regulatory compliance with the Central Bank of Kenya's requirements on customer fund safeguarding, and that we achieve a 100% Trust Coverage Ratio at all times. You will work closely with Finance, Operations, and our payments partners to build systems and controls that protect our customers and keep us ahead of regulatory obligations.

What You Will Do

1. Customer Funds & TCR Compliance

  • Maintain a 100% Trust Coverage Ratio between customer wallet balances and corresponding bank balances at all times.
  • Monitor float and trust account balances across all payment channels and banking partners.
  • Execute accurate and timely daily reconciliations between customer wallet balances and bank account balances.
  • Identify, investigate, and resolve all reconciliation discrepancies within 24 hours.
  • Maintain a zero-tolerance approach to unmatched or unexplained variances.
  • Prepare daily TCR reports for management and regulatory submission.

2. Reconciliations

  • Own the daily reconciliation of customer funds across all settlement accounts, e-money wallets, and payment partner ledgers.
  • Lead the transition from the current manual/semi-automated reconciliation process to a fully automated, end-to-end system-driven reconciliation with auto-matching and auto-closure capabilities.
  • Investigate and resolve all reconciling items within agreed turnaround times.
  • Design and implement auto-matching rules and auto-closure protocols for routine transactions.

3. Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure full compliance with CBK regulations and guidelines on customer fund management, including timely and accurate regulatory reporting.
  • Maintain up-to-date documentation of all treasury processes, controls, and audit trails in line with regulatory expectations.
  • Support internal and external audits, providing accurate schedules, reconciliations, and supporting evidence relating to customer funds.
  • Stay current on regulatory changes and advise management on impact.

4. Payments Partner Management

  • Serve as the primary liaison between TendePay and its payments and banking partners on all matters relating to settlement, float management, and reconciliation.
  • Monitor partner settlement timelines and escalate delays or discrepancies promptly.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with banks, mobile money operators, and other payment ecosystem partners.
  • Resolve settlement delays, missing funds, and partner-side discrepancies.
  • Negotiate and maintain float arrangements and settlement schedules.
  • Monitor partner performance and escalate systemic issues to management.

5. Reporting & Controls

  • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly treasury reports for the Head of Finance and senior management, including cash position summaries, TCR status, and exception reports.
  • Identify and flag liquidity risks, funding gaps, or control weaknesses, and propose practical solutions.
  • Develop and document standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all treasury and reconciliation processes.

6. Treasury Operations

  • Manage daily cash positioning across multiple bank accounts and floats.
  • Forecast daily and weekly liquidity requirements.
  • Optimize cash allocation between operational and customer trust accounts.
  • Authorize and monitor large-value transfers and settlements.

7. Risk Management

  • Identify and flag emerging risks to customer funds or TCR compliance.
  • Develop and maintain contingency procedures for reconciliation failures.
  • Support internal audit and risk assessments on treasury controls.

What We Are Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field.
  • CPA(K) or ACCA qualification (or finalist status) is required.
  • Minimum 3 years' hands-on experience in treasury, reconciliations, or finance operations within a fintech, bank, mobile money operator, payment service provider, or regulated financial institution this is a firm requirement.
  • Solid understanding of CBK regulations on customer funds, e-money, and payment systems.
  • Hands-on experience with reconciliation tools and accounting systems; familiarity with automation or system improvement projects is a strong advantage.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.
  • A self-starter who takes ownership and drives issues to resolution without waiting to be asked.
  • Good communication and stakeholder management skills.
